Anti-Trump Callers Are Overwhelmingly Female, Committed to More Protests

Washington, DC — Congress has been inundated with calls since President Trump was elected, protesting his policies and nominees, and a new poll of activists indicates the protests have only just begun. Daily Action was launched after Trump’s election to make phone call activism easier for the left in the age of Trump. In three months, it has connected over 650,000 constituent calls to Congress totaling over 2 million connected minutes. The text message service connects an average of 10,000 calls per day to protest Trump policies and nominees and has grown to over 250,000 subscribers. Lake Research Partners polled Daily Action’s subscribers to find out ‘who are the activists calling Congress at such high rates and what drives them?’.

Key findings:

  • 86% women, however regionally and generationally diverse.
  • Health care and Climate change are top voting concerns.
  • Steve Bannon and Russia ties are top concerns about the Trump administration.
  • 97% say they are very (76%) or somewhat (21%) likely to protest publicly against an administration policy in the future.
  • 70% participated in either a woman’s march or a travel ban protest recently, including half (50%) who only joined a woman’s march.
  • 90% feel strongly that in order to be paid, Congress should be required to do ALL of the following: hold town halls, answers calls, and release call tallies on major issues.
  • 98% feel the Justice Department should compel President Trump to release his tax returns.

“We all know women took to the streets in record numbers in January after Trump’s inauguration. This poll shows they are not letting up. Women are dominating the phone call resistance and they have a message for President Trump and Congress: the protests have only just begun,” said Laura Moser, founder of Daily Action, which spread organically via word of mouth and social media, experiencing a surge in membership in the days following President Trump’s inauguration and the women’s march.

Daily Action was created in collaboration with Creative Majority PAC and powered by Revolution Messaging’s Revere Calling technology and Revere Mobile Technology.

“We have all heard about the non-stop flood of calls on Capitol Hill since Trump’s election. Now we get our first look at ‘who is the phone call resistance and what drives their activism?’. With an unheard of sample size of 28,000, this poll is rich with data about the most engaged activists in the age of Trump,” added pollster Celinda Lake. “It is rare to see such a strong and universal commitment to protests and holding government officials accountable among such a large population. It speaks to the polarizing extremism of Trump’s first two months. Politicians and advocacy groups alike will be eager to learn about the women leading the Trump resistance.”

Earlier this month, Daily Action put Democrats and Republicans alike on notice as it pledged to connect 100,000 constituent calls to fight the confirmation of Judge Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. After over 1,000 calls to Senator Schumer in the first two days of confirmation hearings, Daily Action thanked the Senate Minority Leader for pushing to delay and filibuster the confirmation.

In addition to emboldening Democrats, Daily Action has placed thousands of calls to persuadable Republicans. The calling service connected over 67,000 constituent calls to protect the Affordable Care Act and kill the Republican party’s attempt to dismantle Obamacare — and released district by district call totals for Republicans who refused to back Trumpcare.

“Together we are creating a critical mass that is impossible for lawmakers to ignore,” added Moser. “The American people are not going to sit back, flip on The Apprentice, and let President Trump and Republican leaders dismantle all the progress of the last eight years. The phones in Congressional offices are ringing off the hook and we are not going to let up.”

Wins include pressuring Democrats to delay and filibuster Gorsuch confirmation; saving the Affordable Care Act with 67,000 calls to Congress; Republicans walking back their plans to gut the Congressional ethics office; Congressman Darrell Issa calling for a special prosecutor to look into Russia ties on the same day Daily Action connected nearly 19,000 calls to the House Judiciary Committee urging a special prosecutor; Attorney General Sessions recusing himself from the Russia investigation the same day Daily Action connected nearly 20,000 protest calls on his Russia ties; Trump’s first nominee for Labor Secretary, Andrew Puzder, withdrew his nomination after losing support from Senators on both sides of the aisle after Daily Action connected over 35,000 calls to Congress to fight the nomination; and delays to several confirmation hearings. Actions have been shared on social media hundreds and thousands of times.

Subscribers receive a daily text message about an important issue and a hotline number they simply click to call. They click the number and listen to a recorded summary of the issue, then callers are automatically connected to their lawmaker or the target of the action. Actions and talking points on the issues are also shared on the Daily Action Facebook page. Daily Action provides subscribers with concrete, quick ways to fight back, taking all the effort out of registering DAILY opposition to the extreme policies and appointees of the incoming administration.

Polling methodology:

A sample size of 28,320 Daily Action subscribers age 18 and over completed a 7 question survey between the dates of March 17th through the 20th. The survey, created with Lake Research Partners, was built using the robust interactive polling feature in Revere Mobile and broadcasted via text. The entire survey took place in participant’s texting apps on their phones.
