Tom Morello, otherwise known as the Nightwatchman, was an early supporter of the union movement in Wisconsin back in February, and hasn’t stopped fighting for workers’ rights since. After performing at the rallies, Morello started right away on his next project to help defend unions – a new album titled Union Town with all the proceeds benefiting The America Votes Labor Unity Fund via SaveWorkers.org.
The title track, “Union Town” is available for free download at SaveWorkers.org and shortly after, the EP will be released digitally on May 17th and the physical CD and Vinyl will follow on July 19th.
The thousands of people that came out to support workers’ rights and hardworking American families inspired Morello to record an album full of “union fighting songs.
“Here’s a soundtrack for our fight,” Morello said.
Along with Morello’s original title track “Union Town,” are two other original songs from Morello, along with Woodie Guthries’ classic “This Land Is Your Land,” radical verses and all. With eight songs total, the proceeds of this EP will go to help a coalition of national labor organizations that came together to defend workers – creating The America Voted Labor Unity Fund. Donating the sales to this organization makes sense, seeing as this issue hits home for Morello.
“I’ve been a proud union man for 22 years and my mom was a union public high school teacher, so for me this fight is very personal,” Morello said. Unions are a crucial counterweight to the raw corporate greed that torpedoed our economy, threatens our environment and wants to strip away decades of social progress. From Cairo to Madison, workers are pushing back and tyrants are falling.”
